Palestinians are celebrating on Sunday the 20th anniversary of the First Intifada, the popular uprising that put the Palestinian cause back on the world agenda.
The Intifada (literally "shaking off" in Arabic) began with mass protests in Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on December 9, 1987 after an Israeli military vehicle ran over a group of Palestinian workers at Erez checkpoint.
Israeli forces killed more than 1,500 Palestinians during the uprising, and left thousands of others injured or disabled.
This year the anniversary comes during an unprecedented state of division in Palestinian society with Hamas in control of Gaza Strip, and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in charge of the West Bank. Efforts by other Palestinian factions to repair the divisions have failed so far.
Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance groups, especially in the Gaza Strip, are using homemade projectiles in the place of the stones which were the symbol of the First Intifada.

Hamas organised rallies in the Gaza Strip on Friday for the second day in a row in protest at attempts by Israeli settlers and politicians to enter the grounds of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
People gathered outside mosques after the Friday prayer, shouting slogans calling on the Arab and Muslim world to defend the Al-Aqsa mosque.
The main rally took place in Gaza City outside the home of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
"These rallies are meant to tell the world that we are ready to starve and die in order to defend the Al-Aqsa mosque, and let this be known by all," prominent Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya said.
ِِAddressing the rally, which included members of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committees, he asked them to prepare to "free the Al-Aqsa mosque from Israeli occupation."
His message to Israel was clear - "Your end has come close because as your tyranny grows, heaven's might grows too."
He also sent a warning to Abbas, "Here we stand near your house to tell you that if you abandon the Al-Aqsa mosque or the Palestinian unalienable rights, you are of no use to us."

The Israeli antiquities Authority intends to resume excavations at Jerusalem's Mughrabi Gate as a part of a controversial plan to build a bridge from the gate to Dung Gate, near the Western Wall. The proposed bridge would pass near the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.

Excavation was stopped in June after protest erupted from Palestinian officials, Islamic authorities, and archaeologists. The Israeli plan is perceived by many Palestinians as a plot to destroy or take control of the Al-Aqsa compound.

The Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported that an Israeli government committee composed of ministers Avi Dichter, Rafi Eitan and Jacob Edery approved renewed work on the bridge, over the objections of the Israeli foreign ministry.

Ha'aretz also reported that the ministerial decision came after pressure from a rabbi in charge of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said it "saw no

"The Iranian people and other peoples will not give up until all of Palestinian territories are liberated," Ahmadinejad told the rally, adding "nations should be allowed to conduct research on crimes of the Zionist regime and decode the black box for its atrocities."

The Iranian president also questioned the scale of the Holocaust and urged for a research of the issue. "You have turned what you call Holocaust into a holy issue and do not let anybody raise any question about it," Ahmadinejad said. "Why don't you let the black box of the

Jerusalem – Throngs of Palestinain faithful were forced to attend a Friday prayer service at Qalandia checkpoint south of the West Bank city of Ramallah when they attempted to reach the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam.

On this third Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, crowds of followers listened to a sermon delivered by Supreme Islamic Justice Sheikh Taiseer Tamimi, who was banned from entering the city.

Israeli forces used teargas and fired rubber bullets in an attempt to forcibly disperse the Palestinians who crowded the checkpoint.

Tamimi said Israeli authorities have opened a synagogue on the southern wall of the Al-Aqsa compound, a step beyond the controversial visit by Israel's then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the mosque that sparked the second Intifada, also known as the Al-Aqsa uprising. The Sheikh denounced this action as a desecration of the Muslim holy site, linking it to other Israeli atrocities such as massacres.

Friday also marked the seventh anniversary of the beginning of the uprising. Tamimi said the Israli construction of a synagogue

MP Ahmed Al-Haj has affirmed that any settlement to the Palestine cause that does not include the restoration of the holy Aqsa Mosque and occupied Jerusalem to the Palestinians is doomed to failure.

The MP, who is detained in Israeli occupation jails, said in a statement on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the burning of the holy Aqsa Mosque that occupied Jerusalem is the core of the Palestine cause.
