Palestinians are celebrating on Sunday the 20th anniversary of the First Intifada, the popular uprising that put the Palestinian cause back on the world agenda.
The Intifada (literally "shaking off" in Arabic) began with mass protests in Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on December 9, 1987 after an Israeli military vehicle ran over a group of Palestinian workers at Erez checkpoint.
Israeli forces killed more than 1,500 Palestinians during the uprising, and left thousands of others injured or disabled.
This year the anniversary comes during an unprecedented state of division in Palestinian society with Hamas in control of Gaza Strip, and the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in charge of the West Bank. Efforts by other Palestinian factions to repair the divisions have failed so far.
Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance groups, especially in the Gaza Strip, are using homemade projectiles in the place of the stones which were the symbol of the First Intifada.

For the first time ever, Palestinian resistance fighters have succeeded Sunday in unleashing a homemade missile on the Israeli settlement of Nitivot that is located 20 km away from the Gaza Strip.
The incident has apparently worried the Israeli occupation government and its military institution being the first time for a Palestinian home-made missile to reach as far as that distance and accurately hit the target.
Israeli occupation police alleged that the rocket was a Russian-made Grad missile and not a locally-made Palestinian rocket, alleging that the assault caused no damage in the settlement.
The Israeli military institution, however, took the matter very seriously, and described the Palestinian retaliation as "serious

A member of the Hamas leadership has told a Kuwaiti newspaper that 400 bombers, willing to blow themselves up, are prepared for any large-scale Israeli incursion into the Gaza Strip.
Dr Nizar Rayan told 'Al-Jareeda,' "they are prepared and ready for an Israeli attack, with 400 bombers permanently wearing, and even sleeping in, their bomb belts, waiting to attack Israeli tanks."
"What is most surprising is that 200 female Hamas members have volunteered to wear bomb vests to counter Israeli tanks," he added.
"This is not the first time that women have participated in military operations. They have carried out such operations in the Israeli Occupation's own backyard. Today defence of our land is our foremost duty," Rayan said.
Rayan is in charge of the military wing of Hamas and has been entrusted with the task of repelling any Israeli incursion in the Gaza Strip. Rayan is at the top of Israel's "wanted" list and they have tried but failed to assassinate him on a number of occasions in recent months.
He said that "repeated Israeli threats and insinuations to carry out a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip would be welcomed by Hamas' military leaders who have public support from those on the front
