An Israeli soldier was wounded on Wednesday after being shot in the stomach near Ari’el settlement, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
The assailants allegedly drove a vehicle with Palestinian number plates and fled after the attack.
Israeli forces have set up several additional roadblocks in the area.
Army tidings
A group of fighters from Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Brigades, called the Al-Bashaer Army, claimed responsibility for the hit-and-run attack on the Israeli soldier.
Al-Bashaer means tidings. General Commander of Al-Bashaer Army Abu Mahmoud told press in Nablus that the soldier was directly hit in the stomach.
Abu Mahmoud said, "After that, the group headed towards a hitchhikers station and we gave orders to open fire at the hitchhikers, of whom four were injured and two went into shock. Israel acknowledged that six cars were hit with gunshots."
He added, "The operation came as a swift response to the assault on our prisoners at Negev jail."
The general spokesperson of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, Abu Fuad, says the operation proves the brigades are serious about their promise to retaliate as long as Israelis continue to kill Palestinian civilians.
He said the group which carried out the operation used a hunter’s rifle.
Abu Fuad said two activists conducted the attack on a GMC truck and that a settlers’ car came close to them, but they managed to withdraw after knocking into the car and aiming their rifle at the occupants.
